The "new" indicator seems effective and pushy without being messy and confusing. For a site like this one appears to be, I would think the "new" indicator would be less effective though, since there should always be new content on what appears to be an information/news site. If I didn't see "new," I'd exit right away after my first few visits.

It seems like this kind of indicator only really works when it is at the end of the row. It might be too strong to have somewhere in the middle.
