CNN developing stories
I like this "Developing Story" alert on CNN - it is very strong without resorting to Fox News-style excess. It is visible across all sections of the site, but if you dismiss it it stays hidden which is a nice touch. Sadly though you can't actually click through to the story.

Banner Blindness. Unfortuneately, the size and placement made me skip past this for a long time assuming it was an ad. Even now after I realized it was content, I still scroll past it sometimes.
